School’s Out, Hunger’s Not

Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation when school food programs do. For 1 in 4 San Diego children, what they eat at school is the best meal of the day. For some, it’s the only meal they get all day. During the summer months, thousands of children lose access to breakfast and lunch programs, a critical source of nutrition for these kids.  Parents look to their local food pantries or soup kitchens to help meet their children’s daily nutritional needs.

The School's Out, Hunger's Not campaign will provide critical support to special food distributions throughout the summer to ensure that kids and families are getting the nutrition they need to live healthy and productive lives.

Help us meet this urgent need. Sign up a team or individually to raise funds to support the following special food distributions:

Summer Food Service Program: We are working with Boys and Girls Clubs in Fallbrook and National City alongside Revolution Foods to serve free nutritious lunches to all youth 18 years and younger when school is out for summer. We anticipate serving over 13,000 lunches and snacks Monday through Friday over the course of 10 weeks.

Summer BackPack Program: We will also be able to offer each child at the Boys and Girls Club sites a BackPack bag filled with nutritious staple items and fresh produce every Friday in the summer. This is designed to act as supplemental nutrition to kids and their families over the weekend.

BBQ Days: The BBQ days are special events that are hosted by the San Diego Unified School District. To supplement the lunch served to kids, FASD provides 4-6 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to children and their families along with nutrition information. We anticipate reaching over 5,000 kids.

Feeding America San Diego

Feeding America San Diego (FASD) is a community-supported non-profit organization with a mission "to feed the hungry; to advocate; to educate” the public and those living in food-insecure households in our community.

Established in 2007, Feeding America San Diego is San Diego County’s largest distributor of donated food and the only Feeding America affiliate in San Diego County.  Working closely with 170+ partner non-profit agencies, local school districts, and an extensive network of volunteers, FASD provides 73,000 meals to children, families, and seniors in need each week.  FASD is dedicated to creating a hunger-free and healthy San Diego through innovative programs and collaborative community partnerships.

Last fiscal year, 16.2 million pounds of food were distributed to more than 435,000 food-insecure people in our community via our network of partner non-profit agencies and direct service programs.  Through these county-wide partnerships, FASD has distributed 53 million pounds of nutritious food and fresh produce since 2008 from San Ysidro in the south to Jacumba in the east to Rainbow in the north.

FASD works tirelessly to educate stakeholders and the public about the plight of hunger and its effects on San Diegans.  For more information, please visit www.FeedingAmericaSD.org
