Why Mechanics

Over one-third of all wells drilled in the last twenty years are now broken. Often, these wells break because there are no spare parts, tools or people who know how to fix them. Currently, there are 50,000 broken wells in Africa.

Last Year

Thanks to last years' support, 148 well mechanics are now working in India. They are currently bringing sustainable access to clean water to over 700,000 of their neighbors. 700,000 people!! The program has proved so successful, our local partner wants to bring the model to Africa. We do too.
How It Works The pilot will start small. Water for People will train six people in Uganda to become well mechanics: they will learn how to maintain five wells each, and grow from there. Thirty wells will be rehabilitated and one member of each community will be hired to keep the well clean and sell water to the community. Water meters will be installed to ensure water sales are transparent.
The Big Goal The goal is to build a sustainable model that works, and then to scale it across Africa. So this project will go much further than 30 wells. This is an opportunity to kick-start the entrepreneurial water sector in Africa.

Our goal is to sponsor all of these 30 wells in the next 30 days. We need your help. Please consider making a donation or joining our fundraising team.

Help One

Here's how your funds can make a difference:

$20 will bring clean water to one person in Uganda.

$100 will bring clean water to one family in Uganda.

$5,000 sponsors one entire system, which includes: a well for at least 250 people in a village, a job for a caretaker to collect and sell water and a trained mechanic nearby.
