Ten years ago, my friend Wynn and I had too many beers and decided to start a fake holiday. In 2012, I'm proud that that fake holiday, National High Five Day is now being used to raise money for one of the most worthy causes I can imagine: four different organizations doing cancer research.

Perhaps this new mission  is a testament to the fact that we've gotten older, matured. Or perhaps it's just because our plan to monetize National High Five Day mousepads never took off. Regardless, with your support, giving out high fives on the Third Thursday in April this year will be the most exciting and rewarding NH5D yet.  (And if you need a mouse pad with a hastily drawn sketch of what appears to be a horse high fiving a tree with arms, I can direct you to a warehouse where you can haul them out by the pallet. God, what a terrible idea.)

I'm participating in a National High-5-A-Thon to raise money for cancer research!

Approximately 2 in 5 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. It's estimated that more than 500,000 people will die from cancer in 2012. April is Cancer Control Month and I'm raising money to help fund important cancer research.

On National High Five Day, April 19th, I'm going to give 55 high-fives as part of a National High-5-A-Thon to support four organizations doing cutting-edge cancer research:

- The Gateway For Cancer Research in Illinois

- The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in San Diego

- The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle

- The V Foundation For Cancer Research in North Carolina.

Please help support these four great organizations with a donation today.

Whether you can give $5, $50, or $500 -- everything helps.
