Everyone walking for bladder cancer has their story. Ours began about 18 months ago when on July 2, 2010, my dad, Billy Burl Whittemore, was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer. While he had been having health problems for a while, nothing prepared us for this diagnosis. We had never heard of Bladder Cancer nor were we aware that the symptoms he was having were indications of Bladder Cancer. By the time my dad was diagnosed, the cancer had already spread beyond the bladder. He passed away on October 13, 2010, at the age of 62, just a little more than 3 months after being diagnosed.
Do you know that Bladder Cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, yet most people know nothing about it? Last year, over 70,000 people in the US were diagnosed with bladder cancer and over 14,000 people died from it.
My mom, my sister and I feel that the best way to honor my dad's memory, is to try and bring awareness of Bladder Cancer so that someone out there with many of the same symptoms will go to their doctor earlier, ask the right questions, press for more answers, and beat this disease. Becoming more informed about bladder cancer will only increase positive outcomes.
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, people across the country will be joining the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network to Walk for Bladder Cancer. I am walking to raise money for the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) and their programs supporting bladder cancer research and education.
I hope you will join me in the 1st Annual Tucson BCAN walk by making a donation, walking with me, and helping raise awareness of this disease.
