It all started because I wanted to be a writer.
So I wrote and wrote, for years, mostly fan fiction whenever a television show inspired me.
I got better at it, and in 2011 I became a published novelist, with my first book "Takers" which hit ebook shelves on Amazon.com on Halloween, and later also became available on Smashwords. I've also written two screenplays and am working on a third.
Through the latter half of 2011 I became involved in a fan-run website called Hawaii Five-0 Online, where I moved from helping the website owner out posting news items related to the rebooted 2010 Hawaii Five-0 to becoming the site's Head News Writer.
Because of my work with this site, I've come to learn a lot about some very amazing people, who have talents and interests that go way beyond their current creative projects. One such man, H50 Executive Producer Peter Lenkov, made a short tweet that said "Worth your time" and had a link to a YouTube video in it.
I've come to respect Peter Lenkov, though I don't know him personally, and so I checked the video out.
It was this video right here, and it brought to my attention something I cannot ignore. I may not be the most social person in the whole world, but you don't have to be social to care about your fellow man. And I care. This half-hour video opened my eyes to something I'd never even heard of before, and I decided to try and do some small thing to help.
So I signed up to make a monthly donation, to get an Action Kit to be used on April 20th of 2012, and created this donation page to try and do my part to make this campaign to arrest Joseph Kony happen.
I have two children. As a parent, I can tell you that if anyone...ANYONE...ever did to my two beautiful kids what Kony has been doing to children for over two decades, I would stop at NOTHING to see him brought to justice.
Just because these African children aren't of my own flesh and blood, doesn't mean the thought of what they endure and are forced to do doesn't hurt just as much as if they were. And as far as I'm concerned, we're all human beings. We're all souls that matter. We all deserve the chance to grow up and not be forced into sexual slavery, be forced to murder our own parents, be forced to mutilate the faces of other people, be forced to become soldiers when our biggest concern should be homework, recess and what to watch on television for the hour our parents allow.
It's weird how our lives lead us to things. I always have trouble with charities, because there are so many worthy ones that I can never choose what I want to throw my support behind, and never really feel like I'm making that much of a difference if I do. I only found out about Kony and the atrocities he continues to commit because of a journey I started when I was ten years old wanting to write. A journey that has ultimately led me here, where finally I think I've found someplace I can make a difference.
So thank you to Peter Lenkov (@PLenkov on Twitter) for sharing this video, and to the Universe's weird way of guiding me to something that really hit home for me. If even one child is saved from being kidnapped and forced to do unspeakable acts through my tiny voice raising here, then I call that a win.
Please give whatever small amount you can to see the arrest of Joseph Kony happen THIS YEAR. Imagine your little boy or little girl being given a gun. Being told to shoot you dead. Being raped repeatedly for the enjoyment of men like Kony.
I don't think you can stomach the thought any more than I can.
Sincerely,
Chris Davis
