Why am I participating in the 2012 Summer Challenge? Here’s my story:

When I first traveled to Latin America in the summer of 2008, I had no idea how significantly it would change my life. I stayed for a month in a small village in the Dominican Republic, living alongside some of the most impoverished yet most vibrant and compassionate people I had ever met. It was here that I first witnessed the remarkable operation of microfinance at the local Women’s Cooperative. Using a group lending model, these women took out small loans to fix parts of their house or invest in new crops and materials, improving both their health and economic well-being. It was here that I first discovered what an enormous, positive difference a small contribution can make in the life of a person living in poverty.

I returned from the Dominican Republic with a newfound passion for global service and microfinance, and continued to find ways to involve myself in the two fields, both in the United States through school, church, and internships, and abroad through various organizations.

Since the Dominican Republic, I have worked in Nicaragua, Panama, and plan to work in Cuba for a few months next year. Everywhere I have worked, I have come into contact with some of the most genuine, passionate people I have ever met, but also witnessed some of the most devastating poverty I will ever see. Time and time again, I am reminded that a small contribution, and even simple recognition, makes an extreme difference in the lives of the impoverished.

This long history of passion for global service and microfinance has led me to Grameen Foundation, which aims to empower the world's poorest -- especially women -- with access to small loans and other financial services, life-saving information and unique business opportunities. Please help me support Grameen Foundation by making a donation to my 2012 Summer Challenge.

If you can't make a donation at this moment, help me reach my goal by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter! Or, send an e-mail to friends you think might be interested in contributing and include a link to my page!

With more than 1 billion people around the world barely getting by on less than $1.25 per day, every dollar counts.

Thank you so much for your generosity!
