As you know we are passionate about architecture and the power of design to make a real difference in people's lives. Design has the power to transform ordinary spaces into those special places that inspire learning, build community, and transform a village. Right now, we need your help to raise funds so that we can travel to Kenya this summer to help build a girls school and work with the community to design a sports facility and sustainable market in the community.

Village Volunteers, villagevolunteers.org, is a non-profit here in the states that provides volunteer opportunities abroad. Through Village Volunteers and their African partner, Common Ground, we will join a group of volunteers to design a girl’s school (Lenana Girls High School) and plan a Sports Academy at Pathfinder Academy. Sporting events will host teams from surrounding villages. Farmers from the communities of the participating teams can bring their produce to sell and trade. This will create a sustainable food market where communities only grow what is best suited to their area and meet in the central location in order to exchange crops. The complex in addition to the market and athletic facilities will include restrooms, locker rooms and HIV education and testing facilities. The project will create a forum from which the people of Trans-Nzoia and West Pokot Counties, Kenya can learn how to sustainably grow their own food as well as have a market from which they can sell their products while utilizing sports as a catalyst for change.

As designers we have the power to make a real difference in the world around us and I know the time I spend working in Kenya will benefit the area for generations to come and will instill in us, lessons that will influence our practice for the rest of our careers.
