My name is Jessica Vanam and I am a rising sophomore at The Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall, which is located in Milford, CT. It is a small, all-girls high school with an emphasis on service. Next year, School the World, a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of education for youth around the world, will be giving the students of Lauralton Hall the option to raise money to fund the construction of a school in Gutemala, and then travel there to build it ourselves.
At school, I am involved in various sports and clubs. However, I believe that service is much more fulfilling and important. Service broadens my perspective of the world and my view of others. It helps me to recognize that there is much more to a person than I can see. My experiences with service taught me how fulfilling it is to help others. I have realized that the learning process is not just academics and sports- service is what makes it complete.
Next year, if I participate in this wonderful service trip, I will gain a better perspective of the world as a whole. We will raise money to help the children in poverty around the world. However, by going to Guatemala and helping build the school, I will actually see how needy the children of rural Guatemala are. I will also see what an impact this school, with the help of your donations, will make on their community.
School the World not only helps in the building of schools, but it also trains the teachers that will work there. The organization encourages parents of students (who are mostly illiterate) to buy books, which will aid in the process of helping the students learn how to read and write. Education is a gift more valuable than money donations because it enables the students to become self-sufficient and support their family and community. More information on the organization and its efforts can be found at www.thegivingproject.net or (203) 787-3322.
In order to take advantage of this opportunity, I will raise funds that will help build a three-classroom school. I must raise a total of $2,700 by December 17, 2012 ($1050 by Nov. 1, $650 by Dec. 19, $1000 by Dec. 17). By sponsoring me, you will assist an entire community in rural Guatemala. Any donation would be much appreciated:)
