Chaz Davis, a 2012 graduate of Grafton High School and currently a Dean's List student at the University of Hartford lost his eyesight in the spring of his freshman year in college.  The diagnosis was devastating, legal blindness due to Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy or LHON for which there is no treatment or cure, currently.  We are all hoping for a cure in his lifetime.  Because this is such a rare disease, only about 100 cases each year in the United States, there is not enough funding for research though there are promising advances around the corner.  Please think of Charles and donate any little bit you can towards research of Mitochondrial diseases such as LHON.

His father and I have always been proud of him and his accomplishments but never as proud as we are now.  He is handling this setback with strength and determination.

Thank you for thinking of Chaz.

His grateful mother,

Audrey

Celebrate LHON's appearance on ABC 20/20 ~

Make a $20.20 donation to the LHON Project at the UMDF!

An ABC 20/20 episode called My Strange Affliction airs on Friday Sept. 6 at 10 pm.  After it airs, the show can be viewed at:
abcnews.go.com/2020

The show will present Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), a rare genetic disorder that causes sudden legal blindness.

With your help, a cure for LHON can be found.  LHON Project at the UMDF is a non-profit 501(c)3 that raises funds for LHON research, provides patient support, educates and increases awareness.

Please make a $20.20 donation to help those with LHON have 20/20 vision!

About

The Campaign:

LHON 20/20 on ABC 20/20

Celebrate LHON's appearance on ABC 20/20 ~  Make a $20.20 donation to the LHON Project

The Organization:

LHON Project at UMDF

Our mission is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for LHON, a rare genetic disorder that causes sudden legal blindness. The LHON Project works to increase awareness, and to guide affected families to vitally important information, resources and support. Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) symptoms usually begin as sudden, painless loss of central vision. The classic pattern is for one eye to suddenly lose central vision, then on average 8 weeks later the other eye also loses central vision, though many variations on this pattern are possible. After this “acute phase,” severe visual loss in both eye remains. Reading, driving and recognizing faces are impossible. About 100 people in the United States lose vision due to LHON each year, joining the 4,000 or so Americans who are already vision impaired due to LHON. Thousands more carry a LHON genetic mutation, and they could suddenly lose their vision at any time. It’s estimated that about 35,000 people worldwide have LHON vision.
