Campaign Details
Open a door: Help house five of San Diego’s homeless
Homelessness. You see it in our city, in our county, in our community. But what can you do? How can one person help?
Start here, right now.
Donate:
United Way is providing much of the funding to move our most vulnerable homeless off the street. We need your help to do more. It costs $1,250 for the starting costs for each person’s new home. This includes rent payment, food, utilities and support services. Our goal is to raise $6,250 by April 29 to help 5 more people. Already, we’ve helped 177 people in the past 18 months and thousands more have received much-needed medical care, counseling sessions and other services. Our goal is to create 1600 units of permanent housing in our County and fund the services that keep people off the streets.
Create your own fundraising page:
Encourage family and friends to help you reach your goal. It takes everyone working together to fund the solution. Your dollars will be effectively spent in getting someone off the streets – permanently. The top donor will receive a Live United shirt as well as a feature spot on the UWSD website and Facebook page.

There is a solution to chronic homelessness.
A coalition of San Diego nonprofits and community leaders are implementing the “Housing First/Housing Plus” model here in our city. This approach combines stable, affordable housing with the medical, legal, job training and other support services individuals need to stay off the street. “Housing First” has been successful at reducing homelessness by up to 70% in communities across the country.
Solving the problem saves lives and money
Housing the homeless saves money. Local studies find that the chronically homeless cost $100,000 on average in legal, medical, emergency services and other resources. Permanent housing solutions on the other hand can lead to significant savings. One LA study saw a 43% savings for taxpayers.
No one chooses to be homeless
All chronically homeless people have a disabling condition that has created their homelessness or made it difficult for them to leave the streets. These could include substance abuse, mental illness, developmental disability or chronic physical illness.
