Support SDAF and Design Awareness
Dedicated to education and the promotion of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region.
Through the design community, SDAF will be the leading organization engaging the general public by bringing a greater awareness, interest and involvement in the local built environment.
The San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF) is an independent, 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to education and the promotion of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region. We seek to educate students, professionals and the community at large about the value of design excellence. SDAF recognizes that we are all affected, positively or negatively, by the manmade environment in which we live. Our homes, workplaces, schools and the communities in which they exist, profoundly shape our mental and spiritual wellbeing.
San Diego is consistently evolving, densifying and redeveloping. It is easy to assume that the quality of our buildings and urban design is beyond our control or in someone else’s hands. But the reality is that we all play a role in shaping our built environment. We must be aware and be involved in the design of our environment in order to ensure that the ongoing evolution of our city and our region creates and preserves a heritage worthy of future generations. By educating our community and encouraging awareness of the importance of our built environment, SDAF strives to improve our quality of life.
WE ASK THAT YOU CONSIDER DONATING IN SUPPORT
OF OUR MANY PROGRAMS
SDAF Programs include:
Taking a critical and complimentary look at local architecture and design is a vital part of the mission of Orchids & Onions (O&O), San Diego’s only interactive, community-based annual design awards program. With a focus on educational outreach, O&O seeks to engage all San Diegans in exercising their say about our built environment by accepting public nominations, hosting an online dialog and People’s Choice vote.
A jury of design professionals and artists determines the official Orchids & Onions based upon public submissions in categories including: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, historic preservation and sustainable design. The culmination is an enlightening and fun-filled awards presentation, promoting awareness and practical discourse about the state of our region.
SDAF is the official chapter of the international PechaKucha Night organization. We hold four events annually and are always looking for presenters and event support, including A/V and technical, sponsorship and set-up.
SDAF launched this exciting, new program with an exploration of Urban Orchids in June, 2012. The next one is scheduled for June, 2013 and will explore Coastal Orchids. We need researchers, organizers, docents, owner/designer/architect outreach, graphics and more.
New for 2012 is an in-depth original exhibit and companion website that offers a series of visions based on the realities of the present, inspiring examples from around the world of what has worked well, and the range of possibilities for the future of San Diego. The exhibit pushes the potential of our city by framing questions – lots of them. In addition, we will present issues relative to unbuilt projects with a goal of further engaging our community in having a say in the state of their region.
Community Vision Award is a grant program, in collaboration with the County of San Diego, designed to promote collaborative, Smart Growth oriented, sustainable and green building practices.
Inside The Design Studio features live profiles, discussions and stories with an assortment of architects, landscape architects, designers, planners, developers, artists and then some. Inside the Studio takes our audiences on a vicarious visit to the minds’ eye of our guests with penetrating and fascinating interviews.
