A Stand For Hope: Alex’s Lemonade Stand Breaks Records and Broadcasts Across the Nation

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States. At Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, we know firsthand the struggles faced by families whose children have cancer and we are committed to helping.
Alex Scott was diagnosed with childhood cancer, just days before her first birthday. At the age of four, she set up a lemonade stand to raise money for a cure for cancer and raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day! While bravely fighting for her own life, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year and as news spread, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands, donating the proceeds to her cause.
In 2004 when Alex passed away at the age of eight, her stand and inspiration had raised more than $1 million. Truly exemplifying the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”— the foundation has to date raised more than $50 million, funding over 200 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.
This past year, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation held its 8th annual National Lemonade Days campaign. This three-day event kicked off on June 9th with A Stand for Hope, the Alex Scott Phone Bank, a 15-hour fundraiser held on CBS 3 and The CW Philadelphia to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The event raised an astonishing $1,015,618, a record for the fundraiser!
Following the phone bank, Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope, a moving half hour special that tells Alex’s story and raises awareness for pediatric cancer, aired in 24 markets throughout the U.S., reaching over 42% of the country. The documentary showcases other children, who have benefited from the research that ALSF has funded, and the strength, courage, and legacy of Alex Scott. It went on to win several regional Emmy Awards, and was awarded the prestigious 2011 Gabriel Award for Broadcast Excellence.
Of course, in the true spirit of Alex’s original idea, National Lemonade Days would not be complete without lemonade stands! Throughout the event, volunteers across the country joined forces to hold stands simultaneously, raising funds and generating awareness, one cup at a time!
