B4BC’s Shred the Love Campaign Raises Money for Breast Cancer Education and Prevention

B4BC’s mission is to eliminate breast cancer deaths in present and future generations by arming young people with the tools necessary to reduce their risks and lead longer, healthier lives. Our message is simple: Early Detection + A Healthy, Active Lifestyle = The Best Prevention

Boarding for Breast Cancer’s Shred the Love Campaign is a fundraising and education campaign that seeks to unite the board sports community around a love of philanthropy and an active lifestyle during the Winter Season.

Through 16 nationwide events from January to April, friends everywhere were encouraged to participate in support of B4BC’s breast cancer prevention and support programs as well as local non-profit beneficiaries, raising a total of nearly $100,000 this winter season. “Shred the Love is a way of being—healthy, active, and aware,” says B4BC Executive Director Erika Seward.

Mountain resorts, campuses and community organizers hosted rail jams, board-a-thons, learn-to-ride women’s clinics, live music, entertainment and fundraising activities in support of the Shred the Love campaign.

Additionally B4BC’s Check One, Two® traveling outreach experience setup at the events and provided peer-to-peer breast health education and preventative information. B4BC’s unique breast molds provide a hands-on example of what a cancerous lump actually feels like and allow men and women to learn how to perform a breast self-exam.

Each event is unique to the mountain loaded with activities to get everyone moving and educated. Some Shred the Love events were able to raise tens of thousands of dollars, such as the Taos K2 Bumps Challenge & Paint for Peaks Event, which raised nearly $30,000. First was the race, in which teams snowboarded the mogul heavy “Al’s Run” as many times as possible in four hours; after that, the art exhibit auctioned handcrafted artwork by 15 local and national artists using snowboards as canvasses. The local non-profit that B4BC benefitted from the event was The Anita Salas Memorial Fund, which helps low-income New Mexican women pay for breast or cervical cancer treatment.

Another exceptional Shred the Love event to highlight was the 4th Annual Holiday Valley B4BC Board-a-thon, which raised over $20,000 this year and benefitted Camp Good Day Women’s Oncology Program. It included special riding clinics for women, a park contest open to all, local shop demos, outreach booth, silent and Chinese auctions and an awards reception party.

With B4BC’s expansion into Canada this year, Shred the Love Toronto was an especially exciting fundraiser as it officially launched B4BC Canada. The night consisted of dancing, raffling off snow gear and live artwork by local artists through custom B4BC longboard designs.

The Shred the Love Campaign has been growing exponentially since its inception, gaining new unique events. Top fundraiser Rachel Abrahamson raised an impressive $2,572 alone through her Stay Classy fundraising page! The funds raised from the Shred the Love Campaign were used to benefit our year round traveling educational outreach booth as well as our Survivorship Fund, which connects breast cancer survivors or those going through treatment with nature-based wellness retreats in order to enhance their path of healing and long-term survivorship.
