LCRF Funds Record $1 million in Research Grants

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in both men and women worldwide, with 1.3 million people dying from the disease each year. Among women, lung cancer is responsible for more cancer deaths than breast cancer and all gynecological cancers combined.

In 2011, the Lung Cancer Research Foundation’s (LCRF) grant program made history by funding $1 million to 20 researchers at leading cancer institutions throughout North America. These research studies will significantly impact the lung cancer community and will investigate new treatments, screening, and prevention of all cancers of the lung. New knowledge gained by funding this research will lead to more positive outcomes and improve quality of life for all lung cancer patients.

The LCRF grant program was established in 2007 when it funded five major research grants totaling $250,000. All submissions are reviewed by the LCRF Medical Advisory Board according to the standard National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for scientific merit and originality of concept. In just five short years, the LCRF grant program has funded 54 grants throughout the United States and Canada totaling over $3 million. Most notably, several LCRF grant recipients have received continuation funding from the prestigious National Cancer Institute (NCI). In total, funding from LCRF’s grant program has yielded $5.7 million in additional funding. Considering the lack of monetary resources available to researchers, these results are astonishing.

LCRF will continue to fund critical lung cancer research in the hopes of one day developing a cure. With a nomination from the StayClassy Awards, LCRF will gain the national attention it deserves for its past accomplishments and will be propelled into the national spotlight to raise awareness of lung cancer. Together we can make a lasting difference in the lung cancer community.
