The ‘I Have a Dream’ Foundation of Miami is trying to solve generational poverty in the community it has chosen to adopt.
The ‘I Have a Dream’ Foundation has formed an ongoing partnership with the Miller School of Medicine and University of Miami medical students. They come to the ‘I Have a Dream’ program every two weeks and provide a nutrition and exercise service learning initiative program for all 120 Dreamers we service. The program provides a curriculum that has drawn from past interventions with the advisement of Dr. Monica Broome at the University of Miami Miller school of Medicine and Dr. David Katz from Yale University, to address the growing challenges of childhood obesity. The program consists of 3 basic facets:
A. An interactive nutritional presentation, facilitated by UM students, divided into longitudinal classroom sessions.
B. Presentation of ABC for Fitness to teachers in order to encourage them to utilize it in the classroom. ABC for Fitness promotes 6 minutes “activity bursts” interspersed throughout the day, as teachers see fit.
C. Distribution of recipes and grocery lists, interactive cooking demonstrations, and presentation of the classroom program to the parents meeting.
The ‘I Have a Dream’ Foundation has also formed an ongoing partnership with Miami Dade College Dental Hygiene Program. This quarter they have provided the foundation with a Dental Hygiene Service Learning Project to educate the clients we service at Hibiscus Elementary. They came for 6 weeks to provide an in depth presentation on Dental Hygiene to each class in the afterschool program. They also provided a basic Dental Hygiene examination on the Dreamers as well as follow ups. In addition, they provided community referrals for the Dreamers parents to get their teeth cleaned and visit a Dentist at affordable rates.
The Dental Hygiene program has estimated their service learning project cost at $3,000. They provided the dreamers with dental supplies as well as the cost for the basic examination. The Medical Students of UM cost about $3,000 as well. They provided educational services as well as food supplies for our monthly parent meeting.
The Foundation has also partnered with the Service Learning Center at Miami Dade College and Professor Respass in the criminal justice program. She created a service learning curriculum for 7 of her criminal justice classes. I conducted a presentation about “I Have a Dream” foundation of Miami in each of her 7 classes to come do their service learning requirement for us. The turnout rate for this collaboration has been a remarkable success.
