Parks Retirement Village Undertakes $25M Expansion and Renovation, Doubling the Size of its Campus

In 2010, SMRS conducted a comprehensive needs study for the Odessa, Texas area. As a result of that study, SMRS concluded that Odessa is currently significantly underserved in Assisted Living Services, Memory Care/Dementia Services, and Independent Living Apartments.
Parks Methodist Retirement Village, a Sears Methodist Retirement System (SMRS) community serving the Senior Adults of the Texas Permian Basin and those who love and care for them, was conceived and provided for our area in 1986 by a group of far-sighted individuals who anticipated the need for quality, continuous care retirement living. With the original nursing home now 25 years old, it was critical that this generation of community leaders undertake the same kind of visionary planning and provision for the families of our area whose loved ones need quality independent living, assisted living, health care, and memory care in one familiar setting. It was time to renovate and expand what served long and well. The Parks is the only Continuous Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in Odessa, Texas, and one of only two CCRC campuses in Midland/Odessa. It is currently home to approximately 170 senior adults.
But since Odessa was named a Certified Texas Retirement Community in 2008, our city finds itself underserved in all areas of Senior Care. Therefore, SMRS undertook a $25 million expansion that served to put “a new face on an old friend” and provide the kind of attractive and state-of-the art senior care that is characteristic of the SMRS family of campuses throughout Texas. Before the start of the expansion and renovation, the campus consisted of 90 nursing beds, 23 assisted living rooms, and 55 cottage homes. After the completion of the expansion, Parks will be a village twice its current size; the expansion will bring 80 new independent living apartments, 40 new assisted living units, and 30 new memory care units. In addition, this expansion will add approximately 100 new permanent jobs to our area and another 200 new jobs during construction. In addition to the needed expansion, the original Parks was still a 1986 structure with inadequate mechanical systems, insufficient therapy space, inadequate dining service capacity, and outdated living areas. So,SMRS conducted a fundraising campaign help to retrofit and redesign the long term care center into a new, more resident-centered, service-rich environment. SMRS funded $22.5 million of the $25 million project, and asked the Permian Basin to undertake an initiative to raise $2,500,000 to upgrade and renovate the existing healthcare facility.
The Parks and SMRS hosted a number of Parks Vision events with leaders in this community who affirmed our area, that the timing was advantageous, and that significant financial support could be expected from people and businesses in the area who recognize the critical need for these services. Their affirmation caused us to believe that, “This is the Season” in the life of our community, its elders, and their families. And so with their wise counsel and encouragement, we were successful in raising $2.35 million for the campaign, with construction underway and expected to be completed by December 31, 2012.
