Providing Quality Care to Improve the Health of South Los Angeles
data-via=”" >

Our service area includes the highest percentage of children and second highest percentage of adults who are uninsured in Los Angeles County. Poverty, race and insurance status are all important determinants of health access, where more than a third of adults report difficult accessing medical care.
St. John’s Well Child and Family Center was founded in 1964 as a small, volunteer pediatric clinic. Over the last five decades, the organization has expanded to become one of the most significant and comprehensive safety-net providers in Los Angeles County. Our network now includes ten federally qualified health centers and school-based clinics that span the breadth of Central and South Los Angeles and Compton.
During 2011, we served 41,539 low-income children, adolescents, and adults through 121,586 primary medical, dental, and mental health visits. Our mission is to eliminate health disparities and foster community well-being by providing and promoting he highest quality care in South Los Angeles. The central goal of St. John’s is to address the unmet needs of low-income, uninsured, and underinsured residents of our service area by providing access to linguistically and culturally appropriate health services, regardless of patients’ ability to pay. The primary and preventive services now offered at our health center sites include: medical and dental care for all life cycles, reproductive health and family planning, well baby and child services, chronic disease management, mental health counseling, immunizations, laboratory procedures, and dispensing pharmaceuticals.
“My husband was a diabetic, and his blood sugar level went up to 700. I rushed him to California Hospital. A nurse there recommended us to St. John’s,’ said Leta, a patient at one of St. John’s health centers. “They changed our life tremendously. His medication, diet, weight – they saved his life. And if it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I’d have him.”
Our work goes far beyond the traditional healthcare model to embrace the broader concept of health and well-being. We place a high priority on developing supportive services to address this boarder spectrum, such as families’ educational, socio-economic, and mental health needs.
In 2011, our programs department provided support services to 53,764 individuals through outreach, health education, child development and literacy education, case management, and insurance enrollment. We have an impressive history of successful partnerships with health, educational, social service and development agencies to deliver a wide range of services that are responsive to local needs.
