Seacology Saves Islands
From lemurs to sea turtles, islands are home to more than half of the world’s endangered plants and animals. But with more than one million islands on our planet, how can we address this problem? Seacology has an answer: protect island environments, one acre at a time. With Seacology’s Save an Acre program, everyone can do their own part to help protect islands—and every acre counts!
Save an Acre was conceived as a way to reach more island supporters—people who care about endangered species and island conservation, but haven’t heard of Seacology or don’t have the resources to fund an entire Seacology island project. With Save an Acre, everyone can protect islands; every tax-deductible donation of $40 saves one acre of rainforest or coral reef. And Seacology’s straightforward approach means that you know exactly where your money is going: to protect a Philippine rainforest or coral reefs in the Cook Islands. In each location, Seacology is working closely with an indigenous island community that is interested in preserving their local natural resources and native habitat. They have agreed to monitor and protect the designated reserve in exchange for support for their humanitarian needs. Local management ensures that these reserves are truly safe havens for wildlife and ecosystems, rather than meaningless “paper parks.” Even better, you can share your support for the world’s islands with a loved one by donating in their honor. When you do, Seacology will send them a beautiful card showcasing the habitat you helped to protect. Save an Acre brings together island lovers all over the world to protect these most amazing places. In just a few months these supporters have already protected more than 150 acres of island habitat, but Seacology’s work is far from done. With their innovative Save an Acre campaign, Seacology will continue to reach out to island supporters from all walks of life to protect these ecological treasures.
